DEBUSSY’s VIOLIN SONATA.
A true French patriot, Debussy could not enlist to fight in the front when war started in 1914. He was gravely ill with cancer. Instead he decided to fight with his art and his publisher announced that Debussy, musicien français, would the compose of six sonatas for different instruments.
He completed the violin sonata in 1917 and died in 1918. It was his last work and it is noted for its conciseness, warmth and positive attitude to life. It is extroverted music in which homage is rendered, in the piano part, to Couperin and Rameau and being of mono thematic construction his sense of freedom is remarkable.
